Ai2 open-sources AstaBrief, a small model for writing cited research reports
The Allen Institute for AI released AstaBrief 8B, which turns a research question and retrieved literature excerpts into a cited report. It powers the Fast mode of report generation in Ai2's Asta platform.
The Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) open-sourced AstaBrief on October 2. The 8-billion-parameter model takes a research question and excerpts from retrieved papers and produces a report with citations.
Ai2 says it set out to test whether a small open model trained for scientific report generation could match the quality of the proprietary models it had been using while cutting generation time and serving costs. AstaBrief now runs as the Fast mode in Asta's Generate a report feature, alongside a Claude-powered Thinking mode. The model and training data are on Hugging Face.
